Check labels rather than slot size
A long PCIe connector does not necessarily provide sixteen active lanes or an independent connection. Identify PCIEX16_2 and M.2_3 from the board printing and official layout. The MoboDocs map shows selected components; the manual contains the complete arrangement.
Write down the card and SSD models, occupied sockets and when detection stopped. This is useful evidence when a fault follows a storage upgrade.
Confirm the documented conflict
If both affected sockets are occupied, the sharing rule is a plausible explanation. Testing with M.2_3 empty can separate this limit from a card fault. Shut down and disconnect power before moving hardware, and account for any operating system stored on the removed SSD.
Check detection after each single change. Moving several devices at once obscures which connection made the difference.
Pick a compatible alternative
An unused M.2_1 or M.2_2 may accept the SSD, subject to the exact CPU and storage specifications. Check interface, module length and occupancy first. Heatsinks and graphics-card clearance can affect access.
Alternatively, retain the SSD in M.2_3 and relocate the expansion function only if another slot or external connection meets its requirements. Do not assume a narrow slot supplies the bandwidth a capture or storage card needs.
Before purchasing anything, make a connection plan showing the required devices and available compatible paths.
When the rule does not explain the failure
If PCIEX16_2 remains unavailable with M.2_3 empty, check the card's installation and requirements separately. A driver only helps once its hardware is available to the system.
Avoid random PCIe-generation or storage-mode changes as a substitute for checking the hardware arrangement. Use the current specification's CPU-dependent footnotes and retain notes about the final working configuration.
